The Best Approach To Choose A Sofa

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Settees and sofas are an integral centerpiece of any home, and the right one is vital to be sure you get the most from relaxing in the living room.

The very first point you need to consider is the shape of your settee or sofa, what shape would work for your room. If your living room is a strange shapehowever, you have a corner that you can work with, think about corner settees and sofas. It is crucial that the measurements are exact, you don’t want to end up having settees or sofas that look awkward or even worse don’t fit into the room you have available.

Many modern sofa designs will include a low back. While this is a very good way to increase the sense of space in a small room, a low backed sofa won’t offer much support, so make sure you take this into consideration. If it’s comfort you’re after and you have no concerns over space, you will probably find a high backed sofa your best option, a high backed sofa can work especially well in a room with high ceilings.

With regards to choosing settees and sofas many individuals pay little attention to the filling of such furniture. If the cushions are containing foam then they would be the most supportive option and spring back to their original shape, a feather filled cushion provides a soft alternative. However, feather cushions can prove to be a minor annoyance, as they will need regular plumping to be sure the cushions keep their shape. A feather filled sofa may also cost you that little bit more. Therefore, cushions made out of a combination of foam and feathers tend to be your best option.

Another point to consider is the material you will want sofa to be made from, are you wanting a fabric sofa or a leather one. Fabric is often more versatile when it comes to colour and design, but on the flipside leather will offer a more classic look that won’t go out of style.

Quality leather is a very hardwearing material, and like a fine wine, it’ll improve with age. You will have to make sure that leather is kept at the least 30cm away from radiators or other types of heat, or the material could become scorched or cracked.

If you live in a particularly small home, or regularly have more guests than you have beds, you might like to look at a sofa bed. In times gone by the generalisation was that sofa beds were ugly and uncomfortable, not managing to serve very well as either a bed, or sofa. But over recent years there’s been considerable developments in the design of sofa beds and a few may even include a mattress. So it can definately be worthwhile to shop around, and just ensure you have the space to extend it into a bed.

If you are looking to furnish a property for rental you might have other requirements to meet. Whilst you need your tenants to be comfortable and happy, you have to consider that wear and tear is part and parcel of renting. Therefore, you’re best off choosing a hardwearing fabric, ideally one that is easy to clean or replace. You also need to ensure that all furniture in the rental home complies with the Furniture and Furnishings Fire Safety Regulations, which means that you’ll need fire retardant sofa fillings and coverings.

Panasonic 3D TV is 3D Ready

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

When high definition TVs were new, they were all marked as ‘HD ready TV’. People were buying the HD televisions and not having access to HD programming. It’s not really an HD TV unless you are watching HD content. The new 3D televisions are the same as they HD ready TVs. They are marked 3D ready as without 3D content, a 3D image is not displayed.

Unfortunately people were not thinking about available content when they would buy an HD or a 3D tv. Panasonic realized what was happening and started including a 3D version of Avatar, the blockbuster movie, with each new Panasonic 3d tv. Once people put on their 3D glasses and watched the 3D version of Avatar, they were hooked.

People with a Panasonic 3d tv were now demanding more 3D content beyond the limited to 3D DVD and 3D Blu-Ray discs, and Sky stepped up in the UK to provide more content for its subscribers. The glasses are still required for 3d tv viewing, a Panasonic 3d tv buyer will find that one pair of 3D eyewear is included with each TV. By wearing the glasses to get the 3D effect, a person is somewhat limited as they have to sit almost directly in front of the television. Unless you have a large TV viewing area, this may present a slight problem for some people.

Looking After Your Mattress

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

If you have just invested in a new mattress, there are certain steps you can take in order to properly care for your purchase and ensure that it lasts for a good long while.
After delivery your mattress should be immediately aired for around four hours. This freshens the material and removes any aroma the mattress may have received during its time in storage. The mattress should then be aired on a weekly basis, by turning back your bed linen for a few short hours.
If you have a sprung mattress, it is very important that you turn the mattress regularly in order to maximise its life. Your body weight compresses the mattress, leading to dips in the material and, eventually, an uneven and uncomfortable sleeping surface. Turning the mattress ensures even distribution. If turning a heavy mattress is a problem for you, an alternative is to invest in a one sided “no turn” mattress, designed especially to withstand the effects of body weight.
Visco-elastic (memory foam) and latex mattresses do not need turning. In some cases these mattresses only have one sleeping surface anyway, and so literally cannot be turned. However, these mattresses should still be rotated lengthways every now and again, ideally once a month, in order to maximise their life. Over time these kinds of mattress may feel as if they are steadily becoming softer. This is because cells within the foam open more fully, causing the surface to react more quickly. This is not a problem and shouldn’t worry you as the important pressure relieving properties of the mattress remain intact.
To get the most out of the mattress you have chosen and to maximise its longevity, it may be worth buying a washable mattress protector. These are available in various styles, including anti-allergy and waterproof. Avoid using a plastic sheet on or under your mattress though, as this prevents air circulation and can cause condensation. Mattress toppers are also an option. These add a luxurious extra layer of comfort on top of the mattress, also providing extra support. Why not check out beds, mattress toppers and mattresses from Bedstar, they offer good quality products and next day delivery.

Types of Duvet

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

The weight, softness and warmth of a duvet depend on two factors. The first is what is called the “tog” rating. The tog rating of a duvet is based on the duvet’s ability to trap warm air. Duvets filled with natural materials have better thermal properties than those filled with synthetic materials, and require less filling in order to achieve the same level of warmth. Naturally filled duvets can therefore be deceptively light, but still keep you very warm. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet will be.
The problem with buying a duvet on either end of the tog spectrum is that the temperature obviously changes throughout the year and you will want a cooler covering in summer than you will in winter. For summer, a lightweight duvet of between 3 and 4.5 tog is recommended. For autumn and spring, between 7 and 10.5 tog is ideal, and for winter between 12 and 13.5 tog is perfect. You may wish therefore to invest in a combination duvet. These usually consist of two separate duvets, one lightweight one around 4.5 tog for summer months and a warmer 9 tog for autumn and spring. During the cold of winter, you can put these two duvets back together for a toasty 13.5 tog rating. During winter time, make sure to get bedding in a thicker fabric, and this will keep you even warmer.
Duvets containing natural fillings like feather or down are also given a “fill power” rating. This is the volume that the filling occupies, and it varies depending on the quality of the duvet. The fill power rating measures how well the filling recovers after use and relates to its thermal efficiency. Basically, the higher the fill power, the better quality the duvet.
If you like for your bed to have a full, well made look, or if you and your partner often fight over who has the duvet, you might one to choose one that is actually a larger size than your bed. You and your partner may also argue over the tog rating of your duvet, for example if one of you feels the cold more than the other. Some specialist retailers do offer duvets to order with a different tog rating in each half. If this sounds like the perfect solution, it is worth hunting these retailers down to find the perfect duvet for you. Why not check online for a shop that sells these types of duvets such as Very.co.uk which offers different sizes duvets and bedding.
